International Colloquium on Mediterranean Photography

The purpose of this international congress is to investigate the main theme of this year’s festival as to create a platform for exporting and exchanging cultural work within the Mediterranean basin. Renowned figures from the field, including art directors, curators, artists, critics, sociologists and historians will develop their views, in order to provide a multifaceted approach to the topic.

Photo folio review were organised for the fi rst time in Greece by the Hellenic Centre for Photography, and function as a meeting point between artists and photography experts. Festival organisers, publishers of photography journals, curators, photographers and art theorists, with many years of experience in the fi eld
of photography and culture in general, will observe work by certain photographers, discuss and critique their work.
Athens Photo Inspiration 08 by Nestea

Athens Photo Inspiration 08 will take place on Sunday 2 November 2008 and it is addressed to all those who feel young and dynamic, and use photography as a means of expression and inspiration. It is an original action, open to the public, with characteristics of a contest . Its main purpose is to support both individual and collective artistic expression through photography. The audience will have the opportunity to take part in a photography “marathon” in the heart of Athens, during which it will approach, through its own lenses, a series of subjects. The prerequisite for participation is mainly inspiration and desire for creativity and not so much the technical knowledge of the photographic fi eld. The ultimate goal of this event is to be repeated on a yearly basis and become a meeting point for all photography lovers.
Lectures
Well known photographers will present their oeuvre through a series of lectures, as well as their views on photography. They will project a series of their works on to a big screen and proceed to analyse and discuss these with the audience:

In association with Photo Folio Review will run an educational programme on Portfolio Preparation aimed at photographers, artists and anyone else wishing to get involved in the design process and the development of their own work.
Educational programme for children “My Mediterranean”

An experiencial educational programme will be run by specialised motivators aiming to bring the participants in touch with aspects of the photographic medium and with the visual culture in general. It is an artistic practice, an experimentation in contemporary media through personal and collective modes of expression. The participants, in a brief photographic stroll in the Plaka area, will try to express through symbolism the image of a contemporary Athens as a Mediterranean city. The photographic outcome will be the basis for an artistic composition with the use of colours and various materials.
Photo Competition: Glances at the city of Athens
The Hellenic Centre for Photography in co-operation with Fnac organised a photographic competition themed «Glances at the city» aiming at encouraging the artistic expression of the public. The participants are requested to present their personal view of life in Athens – hangouts, new neighbourhoods, inhabitants, everyday routines, passers-by – and anything related to the city. The best photographs will be presented to the public in a special exhibition at the Fnac Forum in Marousi, while the four best will receive a gift of digital photo cameras by Sony.
Conference: The creative photograph in archaeology
On the occassion of the exhibition «The creative photograph in archeology» which is presented in the frame of Athens Photo Festival 08, is organised an international conference which will be held in Benaki Museum, Annex Peiraios.

Conference: Photography during the Spanish Civil War and
the European Resistance 1936-1945
On the occassion of Spyros Meletzis photographic exhibition titled «Resistance on the mountains 1942-1944» which is presented in Athens Photo Festival 08, the Modern Greek History Research Centre (Department of Political Science and History) of Panteion University organises a conference with the following subject: "Photography during the Spanish Civil War and the Europian Resistance 1936-1945". It will be an international meeting of University Professors and Researchers from United Kingdom, Yugoslavia, Greece, Italy and Spain.
The use, the transelation and the way of reading this particular type of photography regarding the time of Resistance in Yugoslavia, Greece, Italy and the period covering the Spanish Civil War are the main issues that this conference will be examining and deploying.
