WORLDWIDE FOLKLORE & CUSTOM PHOTO CONTEST Collecting MEMORIES OF THE MANKIND
Background: HPA2009 contest, co-organized by China Folklore Photographic Association (CFPA), UNESCO and Guangzhou Asian Games Organizing Committee (GAGOC), was formally launched on 16th September, 2008. It aims to call upon worldwide photographers, professional or amateur, to record the world’s folklore cultures, spread and share the diverse cultures among mankind. Under the support of GAGOC, A World Folklore Photo Exhibition will be held in Guangzhou Asian Village as the main cultural exchange activity of 16th Asian Games which will include the winners’ photos of HPA contests concerning 118 countries. The exhibition photos will be selected from the entries of HPA2009. Therefore, we hereby invite you to participate in this worldwide event. Your outstanding work might be the ONE shown in the Gallery of 16th Asian Games and witnessed by the world.
About HPA: 1. The only world folk photo contest all over the world; 2. Launched by CFPA(China Folklore Photographic Association); 3. Co-organized by UNESCO and GAGOC; 4. Five successful contests in the past; 5. 94 nationalities have participated in the HPA contests; 6. Each entry should consist of a minimum of 6 and a maximum of 12 photographs; 7. NEW YORK PHOTO AWARDS 2009

The New York Photo Awards 2009 will once again honor talented photographers from all over the world whose exceptional work breaks new ground visually, intellectually, and aesthetically. The Awards will give these visual artists the opportunity to reach key decision makers in the photographic community and the editorial, fine art, and commercial worlds. Submissions will be accepted March 2 – May 1, 2009. The Award winners will be announced in May during the second edition of the Festival.

The New York Photo Awards Ceremony is scheduled to return to St. Ann's Warehouse on Friday, May 15, 2009, starting at 8PM. The work of the Award Winners and Honorable Mentions will be presented on the big screen before a packed audience of industry luminaries. Fourteen major awards will be publicly presented to the Award Winners, and 28 artists will receive Honorable Mention certificates.

All Award Winners and Honorable Mentions will enjoy unprecedented visibility for their work. In addition to the New York Photo Awards ceremony, their work will be showcased on the New York Photo Festival website, and published in leading photo magazines. These artists are also automatically eligible for inclusion in a beautifully produced New York Photo Awards Annual, available for purchase online through the New York Photo Festival website.

YOUNG PORTFOLIO '09 ACQUISITIONS

In an effort to preserve works by young persons enthusiastic about expressing themselves through the art of photography, the Kiyosato Museum of Photographic Arts (K*MoPA) issues an annual call for submissions to its "Young Porfolios" program.  This is not a contest. The single condition is that applicants must be 35 years old or younger. All photographers, professional or amateur and regardless of nationality, are invited to submit their published or unpublished works to be considered for induction into the Museum's permanent collection. We strongly believe that there is no clearer signal or more direct means of support for the young photographer than the purchase of their work for a permanent museum collection. Our principal objective is to encourage and cultivate the precious sprouts of younger talents.  Prior judges include Moriyama Daido, Araki Nobuyoshi and Hosoe Eikoh. Applicants of all categories are highly expected. Call for applications

Artists, designers and theoreticians are invited to submit research and production proposals to become a researcher at the Jan van Eyck Academie. Candidates can either apply with a topic of their own or for a project formulated by the institute itself. In order to realise these projects, the Jan van Eyck offers the necessary made-to-measure artistic, technical and auxiliary preconditions.

Multi-Disciplinary Research
Artists, designers and theoreticians at the Jan van Eyck Academie work alongside each other and establish cross-disciplinary exchange. The academy is not led by predetermined leitmotivs. Artists, designers and theoreticians can submit independently formulated proposals for research and/or production in the departments of Fine Art, Design and Theory. They can also participate in research projects formulated by the departments (see below).
The research projects, miscellaneous in nature, make the Jan van Eyck a multi-disciplinary institute. This also shows in the programme of the institute. Researchers, departments and the institute organise various weekly activities, to which special speakers are invited: lectures, seminars, workshops, screenings, exhibitions, discussions, … The Jan van Eyck community and external interested parties are welcome to attend this programme. The result is a dynamic and critical exchange between the different agents from within and outside of the Jan van Eyck.

Facilities
Researchers are advised by a team of artists, designers and theoreticians who have won their spurs globally. They receive their own studio and a stipend. Furthermore, researchers can make use of all kinds of facilities which support their projects, from first concept to public presentation, including the library, the documentation centre and various workshops: materials (wood and other materials); time-based productions; analogue and digital (online and offline) publishing (including photography and silkscreen). They can also get assistance with their print work, the editing and distribution of publications and the publicity of events.

Applications
Candidates applying for Fine Art, Design or Theory are asked to propose an individual research project. They can also indicate their interest in participating in one of the projects that are offered by the department of their choice or other departments.
The academic year runs from 1 January to 31 December. Research candidates can apply for a one-year or two-year research period starting annually on 1 January. It is also possible to apply to do research for a different period and with a different starting date.

HASSELBLAD INVITES ENTRIES TO THE 2009 MASTER AWARD

This year, we are opening the 2009 contest to all established professional photographers using large and medium format cameras, regardless of brand. We will award 9 Hasselblad Masters designations, accepting submissions in Fine Art, Nature/Landscape, Social/Wedding, Portrait, Fashion, Editorial, Product, Architecture, and General Photography categories. We have even established a special category for up and coming photographers that is open to all professional photographers, regardless of length of time in the business or camera format used.

All shooting done in conjunction with the Hasselblad Masters program or its activities shall be done using entirely Hasselblad gear. To this end, winners of the 2009 Masters Awards will receive an equipment sponsorship agreement with Hasselblad wherein they will receive the use of an H3D digital camera system for two periods during the year. One period will be for use at the photographer’s discretion and the other will be devoted to the creation of images for a special Masters Commemorative book to be published in 2009. This book will allow the ten winning photographers to freely interpret a theme or themes in whatever creative manner they see fit, celebrating the range and versatility of both Hasselblad cameras and Hasselblad photographers.

VIDEO ART FESTIVAL MIDEN

Video Art Festival Miden invites all video artists and video creators to participate in this year’s events, which will take place, like the past four years, in public spaces of the Historic Centre of Kalamata, Greece , in July 2009.

Festival Miden is supported by Kalamata’s Historic Centre Organisation, The Messinia Chamber of Commerce and the Municipality of Kalamata .

A. Call for videos (deadline 31 March 2009)
In it’s 5th realization, along with the main program, Festival Miden wishes to present the following additional special showcases:
1.       a special theme program entitled “Transforming the ordinary”
2.       a special theme program entitled “Strange thoughts”
3.       a tribute to videodance
4.       a special theme program entitled “Urban (R)evolutions”

B. Call for images (deadline 15 May 2009)
In the context of the “Urban (R)evolutions” thematic unit, along with video screenings we invite all artists to submit still images (photos, digital images, photo-montages, collages, drawings, 3D graphics, architectural proposals etc) which transform and alter creatively the urban landscape. Each participant can submit up to 10 images. All submitted works will be screened in the form of a slide-show in open spaces of the Historic Centre of Kalamata. Submitted works must be original. Minimum image size 800x600pixels, 72dpi, tiff, jpg or bmp format. Please send your images along with a short cv via e-mail at festivalmiden@gmail.com with the indication “Urban-stills”.

ARCUS Project IBARAKI 2009 Artist-in-residence Program

Application and Program Outline

I. INTRODUCTION
Artist-in-residence program of ARCUS Project which aims to support the artistic activities of emerging visual artists was launched in 1995 by Ibaraki Prefectural Government as its main organizer. In its 14 years history, ARCUS has invited 71 artists from 24 countries/regions and supported their artistic projects and researches during the residence. A number of previous residency artists are now known as cutting-edge artists in international art scene. In 2009, ARCUS calls the artist who can think radically, experiment innovative ideas, and work with progressive modes of expression.

II. ELIGIBILITY
The Applicant should:
- be an emerging artist engaged in contemporary visual arts or other related fields
- have legal permission to enter Japan
- be in a state of good health and able to carry out daily activities on his /
her own
- have enough English or Japanese language skills to communicate with other artists and administration staff
- not be enrolled in educational institution (undergraduate, graduate school etc.) during the residency period.

III. Period of program: Late-August through December, 2009
Artist should stay three months at the minimum, and four months at the maximum including the period of official programs (see the Program Outline on the website for the detail).

V. SCREENING AND ANNOUNCEMENT
- The expected number of the artists to be invited is two.
- The screening process will be conducted in two stages, stage 1 & stage 2

Applicants who pass the first stage only will be passed through to the Selection Committee.
- The Selection Committee is scheduled for May, 2009.
- The final results will be announced and sent to the applicants by e-mail by
the end of June, 2009.
- Individual queries concerning the selection process will not be answered.

PRIX VOIES OFF 2009

For thirteen years now, The Voies Off festival has offered an alternative look on emerging photography with its own specificities, its evolution and its struggles...
The evening shows staged by the Rencontres d'Arles Voies off Festival have become a worldwide reference for the discovery of new artists and the follow-up of photographic creation. Through its themes, the festival takes a critical look at the evolution of the present world. Each year, around twenty different nationalities are represented at the Festival Voies Off.
Each year The Voies off Prize, granted by a jury of saluted professionals, is awarded for an artist's high-quality work and insightful vision. A 2000 Euro grant will be awarded to the prizewinner.
