Archive

With the passage of time, a natural by-product of the centre was the creation and safeguarding of an important photographic archive, derived mainly from grants by bodies and artists; which constitutes just one of the multifaceted H.C.P. activities in the field of photography in Greece.

The archive of the Hellenic Centre for Photography is one of the major collections of photographic objects in Greece and numbers more than 2,500 works, by approximately 300 artists active in the contemporary photography scene in Greece and overseas.

The Greek collection contains photographs by renowned and well-established Greek artists, who represent the “new wave” that formed a new view of photography that continues to be dominant in Greece to this day.

The international collection includes photographs from the People’s Republic of China, which were a gift by the United Nations to the H.C.P. archive.

The digitalization of the Hellenic Centre for Photography’s photographic archives was carried out on a more systematic basis with the financial support of the Operational Plan “Information Society”, as part of the Third Community Support Framework. As part of this project the photographic objects of the permanent collection were classified, digitized, documented and catalogued electronically, making the entire work directly accessible for scholars, historians, photographers and other interested parties.
